My favorite and most important job has always been motherhood. Naturally, I was quite concerned about Colin’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health as he battled repeated illness and injury his junior year in high school that affected his cross country season and later shortened his track season. I am a runner myself and a physical therapist, so I was aware of our resources and we were maximizing those with some success, but I knew we were missing a piece. In addition to the stress reaction in his lower leg, Colin was sick too often, getting fevers and strep throat, COVID, and other viruses multiple times over. He missed a lot of school that year, also affecting his grades. Colin wanted his senior year to be different. He wanted to finish strong both athletically and academically. As a captain, Colin wanted to lead his team to a strong post-season finish. He was tired of being sick and was ready to make some changes. So we set up an appointment with Dawn to look at his nutrition. I knew there were gaps, but it was tough to convince Colin to make the needed changes on my own. Dawn spoke with Colin, asked him some questions, performed testing, gained his trust, and enthusiastically encouraged Colin to make changes. Colin was underweight. He didn’t eat anywhere near enough of the right types of food to support his training. He needed to gradually get uncomfortable and start to stretch his stomach to accept and want more food in order to fuel his strength and keep him free from injury and illness. He did the work. It wasn’t always easy for him, but Dawn checked in with him regularly and helped us problem solve. With Dawn on his team, Colin ran several PRs his senior year and was the senior leader for St. Xavier, helping the team find the podium as second in the state of Ohio just behind a very strong Mason team. Most importantly, Colin stayed healthy all season. He gained lean muscle mass, put on a little weight, and was able to stay away from the doctor’s office. He was back to earning First Honors in the classroom. He later found a fantastic fit for him and signed to run for the University of Dayton while he studies Journalism with a Sports Media focus. He’s ready to fly armed with the information he needed regarding the importance of proper nutrition to support his training. Thank you, Dawn! We are so grateful!
